I was walking over on W57th Street near 11th Avenue when I came across a Manhattan Mini-Storage ad that kind of caught me off-guard. I’ve seen these Manhattan Mini-Storage ads on the subway but I’ve never seen this one before. It really leaves nothing to the imagination, which makes me wonder if the adage of sex sells has crossed the line. I mean it’s a lovely photo but I don’t think it’s clever.

I found some of these ads to be a little more clever and humorous, but i still wonder.

We always go to thefwa.com
to find out what’s the coolest interactive website out there. But, have
you ever see a cool Chinese site? Vincent Wang a friend of mine from
china, a talented art director/designer. He does 3D, Flash,
Actionscript, aftereffect and super dope design. Now I’m going to
introduce you to his works. I’m sure there are so many talented people
that’s in China but haven’t get any exposure yet. Whenever I find a
chance, I’ll try to showcase their works to you.

Takashi Murakami

Takashi Murakami has taken Japanese commercial and pop culture and transformed it into an art form all in itself. His art is influenced by anime and manga styles as well as otaku culture. He has an obvious affinity for mushrooms as you can see from his work. His work has been praised by many in the art community as something unique and influential. One of his main concerns is that Japanese art is not appreciated at the same level as European art. He is trying to create a new culture using his art and the philosophy that he can rejuvenate the contemporary Japanese art scene. He has been credited with creating the “Superflat” style, which tries to exemplify the shallowness of Japanese pop culture, art and consumerism with flattened images. You can see his art work o display at the Brooklyn Museum from April 5 to July 13.

Old New York City in Photos

I came across a set of photos of New York City at the turn of the 20th century. These photos are breathtaking and a precious reminder of the roots of the city. So many different people and cultures came together on this small piece of real estate to make it the most dynamic and exciting city in the world. These photos are a snapshot of every day life and the growth that ensued over many years. Much of the origins of the old city remain today. Sometimes I feel like I take the city for granted, but these photos remind me of the grandeur and spectacle of New York City.

When you have limited space in your apartment for things like chairs, you have to get a little clever with how you arrange things. Philippe Malouin has created the hanger chair to address the need for more practical furniture. It doubles as a folding chair and hanger. Now if he can just figure out how to make my huge computer desk double as a loveseat I will be duly impressed.

Shin Tanaka - Paper Dolls

My friend recently turned me on to paper dolls. I had never seen one until she sent me this link: http://shin.co.nr/. It’s a nice idea. You just design the physical layout including all of the fold and cut marks. Anyone can just print it out on a color printer and start folding and cutting. And then presto! You have a paper doll. Cheap, easy and fun. Shin Tanaka has a whole collection of amusing paper dolls. Check it out.

I feel like the packaging for Japanese snacks is meant to appeal to kids, so quite naturally it appeals to my inner child. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that I love the cutesy characters that I find on the boxes of pocky and koala bear cookies. And the snacks are pretty good too…
